1994 Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo Brunate-Le Coste
Now with more than two decades of perfect maturity, tar, licorice and dried meats provide the background to the sweet cherry fruit that coats the palate on this ’94 Barolo Brunate-Le Coste, and it’s only beginning to show tertiary notes of leather, black tea and potpourri. At once electric and sinuous, this wine wraps the palate with a silky grip, studding the cheeks with rounded tannins, and building to a lovely, complex finish that’s accented by bitter chocolate and minerals. Brunate-Le Coste derives its power from the Brunate cru, which also lends the wine’s complexity and intricacy, but this raw strength is tempered by its Le Coste grapes, enabling the wine to delineate its layers of dark fruit. Rinaldi has miniscule production levels--just 500-700 cases for the Brunate/LeCoste--making the estate's long-aging Barolos among the most difficult to obtain.
