2015 Domaine de la Bastide Blanche Bandol Rouge ‘Cuvee Fontaneou’
Now you’re talking, you lovers of old school Provencal reds and funky terroir-driven Chateauneufs, here is Bastide Blanche’s super rare single-vineyard Fontaneou. Old vine Mourvedre is the driving force in this incredible red from a 1.75 hectare vineyards called Fontanieu. North facing (a bonus in these warm years), in the town of Cadiere d'Azur, this vineyard sits on a unique red clay soil that naturally provides a mineral tension and raciness and a very cool, very complex aromatic complex of black, dried plum, bitter chocolate, nutmeg and violet. Entirely destemmed and fermented for 22 days on its indigenous yeasts, it gets an occasional foot pigeage to stir things up and break up the unrelenting intensity of its old vine Mourvedre. Aged in large foudre for over a year, just 4,000 bottles are produced of this delightfully rustic, delightfully complex red that will complement your best garlicy, herby lamb dishes and crush a steak studded with green peppercorns and grilled rare.
