2015 Domaine Le Couroulu Vacqueyras ‘Cuvee Classique’
While the Vieilles Vignes cuvee is driven by its old vine Grenache and dark, brooding Syrah component, the Classique benefits from the addition of Mourvedre which provides a more rustic earthiness and hint of black pepper to the proceedings. Like the VV, the aromatics of the Classique are, well, classique- the savory smell of olive tapenade, blackberry bramble, peppercorn and an intoxicating mélange of Provencal herbs. More mid-weight than the heftier VV, there is a lovely snap and freshness to this wine that will really make you hungry for an herby leg of lamb, grilled chicken or pork chop. We’ve done the majority of our Birding with the Vieilles Vignes cuvee over the years but Couroulu’s importer is anxious make room for a new vintage of Classique and made us an offer we just couldn’t refuse. Neither should you. Simply delicious!
