2015 Rombauer Zinfandel El Dorado Vineyard Sierra Foothills
From the beginning to the very quick finish of the 2014 vintage, we had an all-out frenzy from our Rombauer-faithful looking to get their hands on their single vineyard Zinfandel. It was gone as quickly as I had ever seen it go. The Zin was, as far as Rombauer goes, a bombastic rock star! And, just as the last vintage was a powerhouse, so is the 2015, and just like last year, this will be gone fast.
This vineyard, which is planted in the Sierra Foothills, is Spanish for ‘the gold’. This is because the vineyard is nestled in the epicenter of California’s 19th century gold rush towns. In those days, most of the immigrant miners brought with them vine cuttings from their homeland to ensure they could produce wine for consumption locally. Some of the savviest growers of those days planted large enough vineyards to create a commercial presence and this is why we have so many old-vine vineyards in California today. El Dorado, notwithstanding, is very old vineyard whose vines have been gradually replanted over the years.
This 2015 is a great example of why this wine and the place is so special. Brilliant ruby in color, the dark, sexy fruit is everything we want and expect from Rombauer. It shows fresh blueberry, blackberry and black plum, while also giving hints of Marionberry jam. Meanwhile, mulled holiday spices add a warmth to the enticing fruit structure. On top of all of this, vanilla and toasted coconut shavings are beautifully entwined from an obvious very high quality oak regimen. Drink this now and any time over the next 10 years.
