Amuse Bouche

2016 Amuse Bouche Pharaoh Moans Westside Syrah Paso Robles

Current stock: 6

After an extremely low yielding 2015 vintage, the 2016 vintage was a return to a more traditional growing season. The crop started to flower in early June which lead to a harvest starting at the beginning of September. PharaohMoans 2016 came from three different vineyards on the westside of Paso Robles. The first vineyard was picked during the early days of September. It's planted on a base of limestone soil, where the vines struggle on the rocks, which in turn imparts a beautiful acidity in the wines. The second vineyard is located further towards the west, where there was more rain and more clay with calcareous elements at deeper levels. These vines, goblet-trained, were grafted over an Alban clone, providing an added complexity and tannin structure in the wine. The last vineyard was picked in the middle of October due to its heavy clay soil content and a North facing slope, which resulted in a longer hang-time on the vine and a slower maturation.

The 2016 Syrah was aged in 60% New French Oak barrels from different French coopers, and some once used oak barrels for 19 months. On the nose, there are strong notes of black coffee, spice and pure black fruit with a beautiful texture and acidity on the palate. This wine should age gracefully for 12 to 15 years. 350 cases produced.

"Brilliant purple. Blackberry, cola, exotic spices and potpourri on the deeply perfumed nose. Intense black and blue fruit and spicecake flavors are complicated by suggestions of candied violet and cracked pepper. Finishes impressively long and alluringly sweet, featuring slow-building tannins and lingering blue fruit and floral character."

2016 SYRAH, 92-94 POINTS
"A tighter and more focused red in this 2016. A fine, linear line of tannins to the dark fruit and chocolate. Medium body and a flavorful finish. Drink now."
- James Suckling, June 2018

"Tasted from barrel, the 2016 Syrah (which is 100% Syrah this year) exhibits aromas of minty blackberries, bay leaf and tapenade, framed by a touch of toasty new oak. On the palate, it's full-bodied, richly tannic and a bit more taut and compact than the Grenache, with a tight-knit core of crunchy dark fruit. It'll be interesting to taste it from bottle."
