2016 Château de Puligny-Montrachet Bourgogne Blanc ‘Clos du Château’ AOC
Chardonnay from Burgundy, France
The famous de Montille family, one of Burgundy’s most iconic estates, produce wines that are among the most allocated we sell. They are also the proud owners of Chateau de Puligny-Montrachet, the stately old chateau right in the heart of the town of Puligny-Montrachet. This venerable property, biodynamically farmed and meticulously run by Alix de Montille, is justly very famous for its Clos du Chateau Bourgogne Blanc from the vines gown right around their driveway, as well as the host of marvelous holdings they have throughout the Cotes du Beaune. Because the actual town precincts are not properly zoned for the Puligny appellation, they get tagged with a simple Bourgogne Blanc designation, thus making them an excellent value compared with the Puligny-Montrachet AOC grapes grown just steps away. That’s the way of the Burgundy world….and we’re better off for it. The wine’s lack of official pedigree does nothing to debase the actual quality of this long-recognized white Burgundy sleeper. We’ve long loved its outsized aromas of petrol, lemon curd, jasmine flower and nut skins that come together in a very sleek, understated wine that’s long on class and can last many years too. There’s an extra degree of oomph in the classically-styled 2016 that takes it beyond the ordinary. A very fine value in Burgundy in an era with there are actually very few!
"Le Clos du Château" comes mainly from a vineyard of about 5 ha in one piece located in front of the castle and fully enclosed which facilitates our biodynamic farming method.
Although classified in AOC Burgundy, this vine is remarkably well located in the village and on the border of the vines in AOC Puligny-Montrachet. The deep soil, consisting of silt and clay, gives the wine a beautiful generosity.
From the vineyard to the cellar, we make every effort to ensure that the Clos du Château is an exceptional white Burgundy that honors its origin and its location.
The wines, the style
Our wines are renowned for their high aromatic purity, we always favor balance and elegance rather than power and extraction. The wines are a classic expression of Burgundy, their appellation in general and their terroir in particular. The cultural methods employed contribute to this sought-after customization and winemaking must escape all excesses and seek instead the balance point where the Burgundy terroir will find all the space it deserves.
The harvest is entirely manual and thanks to the use of pneumatic presses, we can modulate our presses according to the quality of the grapes and the profile of the vintage. After a slight settling, the musts are sung in barrels mainly of 600 liters and also of 228 L where the alcoholic and malolactic fermentation takes place.
We use about 5 to 20% new oak with wood mainly from the Allier, long and light heating. The first racking takes place after about one year of undergrowth to begin then the second phase (4 to 6 months) in stainless steel tanks to keep freshness and tension to the wine. We conclude this breeding with a light collage followed by a filtration equally respectful of the wine before its passage in bottles.
Culture of the vine
We set up organic farming on the whole Château de Puligny-Montrachet estate in 2002. Our wines are now ECOCERT certified. Since 2005, biodynamics has complemented these practices respectful of the soil and life.
