2016 Domaine de Piaugier Sablet Cotes du Rhone Villages
Jean-Marc Autan, the current proprietor of Piaugier, is the latest in a long line of family members to farm this remarkable estate located at the foot of the dramatic Dentelles de Montmirail in the southern Rhone Valley. Their 30 hectares of vineyards are spread out among numerous plots and incorporate various soil types, allowing them to produce wines of distinction, deserving of the elevated appellation of Sablet Cotes du Rhone Villages. The Piaugier Sablet is a blend of 75% Grenache and 25% Syrah, fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with a small percentage of the Syrah done in oak barrel. Sablet and its neighboring village of Seguret benefit greatly from the mild Mediterranean climate of the region and their wines have always been a cut above the norm. Piaugier’s vineyards, 25 years of age on average, are planted in the sandy/clay soils of the area and yield wines of bright perfume and racy texture. The 2016 is no exception, with lots of spice from the Grenache and deeper notes from the Syrah. It’s a real mouthful without being overly extracted or overly alcoholic; the perfect partner to a great variety of foods, especially simple everyday fare that requires a hearty red wine. This wine is brought to us by our friend Charles Neal, whose portfolio of French wines always offer tremendous value. All of his wines could easily sell for more but Charles is not in the business to get rich quick. He takes very good care of his producers as well as loyal customers, like us. We are only too happy to return the favor and offer his wines to our valued clientele. Cheers!
