2016 Maison de DEux Montille Soeur et Filles Rully Blanc
This micro-negoce is the brainchild of Etienne and Alix de Montille, the children of the late iconic winemaker Hubert de Montille, and represents the negociant side of the de Montille business. Top notch organic farming, inspired winemaking and still only a fraction of the price of the domaine wines make this a property to follow. Try this Rully Blanc on for size. Sourced from a single vineyard site in the far northern end of Rully, closer to Chassagne than the rest of the Cote Chalonnaise, the vines here are over 50 years old and sunk in clay with nary a rock in sight, and, like all the whites produced in these cellars, is fermented in a mixture of regular and double-sized barrels before a second period of aging in stainless steel, a step Alix insists on to maintain freshness. And fresh this is! As pure an expression of Chardonnay as you will ever find, this is such a beautiful, clean, expressive white with hints of lemon crème brulee, Asian pear, flinty mineral and clove-y spice swirled into a compote of lovely yellow cherry fruit. Medium weight, this is a gorgeous wine that will do nothing but improve over the next three to five years. But, if you’re like us, you won’t be able to keep your hands off it that long! An excellent choice with some local halibut or some of our local Dungeness crab.
