2016 Palladino Barbera d'Alba Superiore
Perhaps our Barbera find of the year, its discovery was a byproduct of our recent dalliance with Palladino’s two amazing Serralunga d’Alba Barolos. It was their importer who tipped us off. No one knows about Palladino’s excellent Barbera, he said, and you can’t beat the price. Turns out he was absolutely right! Here was everything you could possibly ask for in a juicy, complex Barbera d’Alba at a price that will allow you to enjoy it every night of the week if you so desire. Sourced from older Barbera vines in the Parafada, Ornato and San Bernardo crus of Serralunga, the wine is aged for eight months in large, neutral Slovenian oak botti before being released. There’s texture from the wood aging but no taste of oak. It’s really a marvelous, very tasty red. Rich with fruit and quite generous on the palate, it has all of the natural acidity associated with this grape but in a rounder, more pleasant and more complex format. The vintage, of course, was superb for Barbera; classic in fact. It has endowed this beauty with a ton of plummy fruit and plenty of balancing acidity. The classic partner to red-sauced pasta, it would be a marvelous call with your next bowl of spaghetti and meat balls, a delicious pork stew or even a big plate of your favorite smoked meats and cheese. Drinking perfectly well now, it will provide excellent house wine service over the next five to seven years. But yours will all gone by then. I know mine will…… Very highly recommended. Only 7500 bottles produced, 240 are ours. For now…..
