Let’s face it. There is an ocean of pretty innocuous Pinot Grigio out there. The fact is, poor ‘PG’ has become almost synonymous with ‘light, crisp and simple’ as in ‘It’s 100 degrees out so I think I’ll have a glass of the Pinot Grigio instead of the Chardonnay.’ But, in reality, this ‘gray’ version of Pinot Noir can indeed make some very special wine and there are areas where topography, soil and climate conspire to produce the best. Let’s take Jermann (as in Yehr-mann) for instance. This top producer has always been, and will continue to produce one of the best examples of the Pinot Grigio grape anywhere. Period. Jermann comes from the Collio hills of Friuli, close to Italy’s border with Slovenia. Grown on the marl-ridden ‘ponca’ soils so important to the region, a portion of the Pinot Grigio grapes here are partially destemmed and fermented in steel like a typical white wine, while part of it is fermented in aged in barrel like the red grape Pinot Grigio sometimes wishes it could be…that little extra contact between the reddish skin and pulp explains the very faint coppery ‘Gris di Gris’ tinge in the color. The wine is rich and nuanced with a pronounced flinty, smoky character and very impressive depth. Far more textural and more complex than just about anything else labeled Pinot Grigio out there, it has, over the years, become PRIMA’s go-to PeeGee by-the-glass and biggest selling Italian white and it goes extremely well with just about anything on our menu. And yours!
When we put it on sale, it flies out of here and we try to do it twice yearly……..
