The Vinho Verde region of northern Portugal has long been known for its fizzy renditions of white wine made from the score of local grapes that grow in this wild region. In its best examples, Vinho Verde is totally unique, utterly delicious and extremely easy to love. Alas, the majority of Vinho Verde isn’t very distinctive and is made for the discount groceries and taverna wine lists of the world. This more-is-better mentality is gradually changing, however, particularly for those whose vineyards are located in the northern stretches of the region where it borders Spain. The two small villages, Monção and Melgaço, have become hotbeds for quality; a revolution led by several producers whose wines can easily rival their Spanish neighbors in Rias Baixas for a fraction of the price.

Quinta do Regueiro is one such producer. This small operation produces fewer than 10,000 cases annually. What they lack in size, however, they make up for in the tremendous quality they’ve achieved. They’ve won dozens of notable European awards for their small, focused range of very tasty wines. Currently, their production is based on the region’s most recognized varietal, Alvarinho, which produces exceedingly fresh, crisp wines that are high in acidity and capture the saline-like minerality for which this region is well-known. In this cuvee the modestly-zingy grape Trajadura, makes an appearance. Trajadura acts to temper the bracing acidity of Alvarinho and adds a welcomed roundness and better balance to the wine.

The Quinta do Regueiro is a zesty, lively splash of white wine with just a hint of spritz that elevates the flavor intensity, while also adding a pleasing bit of prickliness on the palate. This beauty shows a tremendously wide array of flavors like white peach, apricot, pear, green apple, lemon, lime zest, lemongrass, wax, hay, toast, biscuit, saline and hints of cream. There is no lack of concentration, either. These notes are abundant and they linger for a very long time. Try this wine with your grilled shrimp or swordfish with lemon caper butter, or simply- as we recommend- as your next porch pounder.
