2018 Elio Altare Langhe Nebbiolo
She gently macerates the Nebbiolo grapes in one of their roto-fermenters for a few days and they, after fermentation, spend around five months in used French barriques before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. This is not the sort of handling one expects for a wine in this sort of price point. But it is, after all, an Altare wine, and an Altare wine has to have not only substance but also style! This is not the stripped down, elemental Langhe Nebbiolo one sees a lot these days- there’s oomph there and texture. Tannins. But there’s also fruit. Beautiful fruit! So much fruit that you won’t even notice those tannins, in fact. Cherries, plums, red currants. And spice too: a bit of rose, a whiff of clove. So Nebbiolo! So delicious. So Altare!
