We use decanters a lot at PRIMA.  Those big-boned Napa Cabs really benefit from some airing out and we’d never serve a beefy old Barolo or Brunello without giving it a chance to stretch out a bit in a decanter beforehand.  Our criteria at PRIMA for choosing decanters may be different than yours.  Or, then again, maybe not!  For us, a decanter has to be made of really good quality crystal so it looks great, and it can’t be so big that it dominates our small tables or takes up too much space in our miniscule storage cupboard.  And it has to be durable and easy to clean.  On a good night, a single decanter may see duty twice or three times!  Those crazy twisty-turny sculptural deals that look like Dale Chihuly designed them just wouldn’t work here.  Several years ago we settled on Riedel’s so-called Syrah decanter- it holds 36 ounces, looks extremely elegant on the table, handles nicely, pours very well and cleans up quickly and easily.  We love them here and have all adopted them at home too.

This past week was re-order time (who knows where they all go?) and, on a whim, I ordered a dozen or so extra, just in case you’re fed up with your impossible-to-clean and impossible-to-store decanter too.   And, because Riedel gives restaurants like ours preferential pricing, their price pretty well too.  Let us know if you want one!
