We love old school Chateauneuf du Pape- wines with great aromatic complexity, layer upon layer of alluring fruit flavors and that essence of the unique soils on which the vines are grown.  We love them even better when they’ve been aged to perfection in the winery’s cellars!  These traditionally made offerings are not solely about their lavish textures, elevated levels of alcohol or showy new wood- they are the perfect expressions of old, meticulously-minded vines and the ultra-unique terroir of the region.  That’s why we are digging the now-nine-year-old 2014 la Vielles Julienne Chateauneuf du Pape.  Made as a traditional field blend of Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah, Counoise, Mourvèdre, Muscardin, Terret Noir, Vaccarèse, white Grenache, Bourboulenc, Clairette and Picardan vines planted over 75 years ago and now farmed biodynamically, this wild mélange of grapes is hand-harvested, crushed together, spontaneously fermented and aged in old, neutral casks in order to obtain the purest, most integrated version of this vineyard’s potential.  We love the wines sheer complexity- the way all those diverse aromas meld together to create a silky, seamless, even elegant whole.  Not a showstopper sort of wine, it’s sneaky delicious and maybe even a bit contemplative: the perfect accompaniment to so many different kinds of food!  Me?  I love this wine with a confit of duck and earthy lentils and vegetables but a braised beef or cassoulet would get no argument either!  Rare, special and sent directly from the cellar.  Only 36 bottles.
Wine Spectator: Ripe and rounded in feel, with a silky but persistent structure that allows the cherry preserves and plum reduction flavors to glide along easily. Light apple wood and anise notes fill out the finish. This is poised and balanced. Drink now through 2030. 708 cases made, 250 cases imported. 92 Points
Wine Advocate: As to the 2014s, Jean-Paul made just a single cuvée, and his 2014 Châteauneuf du Pape Trois Source is a beautiful wine in the vintage that has more richness and fruit than most. Offering plenty of minerality, lots of Acacia flowers, spice and assorted red and black fruits, it has medium to full-bodied richness, fine tannin and outstanding length. I’d happily drink bottles over the coming 7-8 years 92 Points
Vinous:  Inky ruby. A complex, deeply perfumed bouquet displays scents of boysenberry, cola, peppery spices and candied flowers, and a smoky mineral note emerges with air. Stains the palate with vibrant red and blue fruit and lavender pastille flavors; juicy acidity and a snap of white pepper provide focus and lift. Impressively balanced and densely packed, finishing with excellent persistence and smooth tannins that are quickly absorbed by the plush fruit.  91-93 Points
