2015 Rio Sordo
Rio Sordo is one of the best Cru sites in Barbaresco. The vineyard faces southwest, allowing the Nebbiolo vines to soak in the sun and reach optimal ripeness. The soils are primarily a mix of calcareous marl interspersed with sand, and there is a large underground reservoir, which allows the vines to drink even during times of extreme water stress. Cascina delle Rose's Rio Sordo Barbaresco is a textbook example of Barbaresco and the best Cru I have tasted from the gorgeous 2015 vintage. This is a wine that showcases perfectly the elegance, power, depth and purity for which single-vineyard Nebbiolo wines are known. Light ruby in the glass with an orange rim, the aromas that emerge are mesmerizing: red berries, kirsch and flowers. The palate explodes with highly concentrated red fruit flavors and a perfect balance of ripe tannins and brisk acidity, leading into a long, captivating finish. The wine is wonderfully complex and full-flavored yet impeccably balanced and graceful. This is the perfect representation of the 2015 vintage: plush, rich fruit with soft, approachable tannins and the structure to age gracefully for 15+ years.
