The 2017 Buil & Giné Montsant 17-XI  is a blend of Garnacha, Carinena and Tempranillo, grown in the predominantly granitic  soil so typical this mountainous appellation.  We love to call Montsant ‘poor man’s Priorat’ (poor man’s anything is right up my alley!) because, while the prices of Priorat’s best wines have soared into the stratosphere, Montsant’s have remained relatively stable.  And while, admittedly, even the best Montsant can’t achieve the sheer intensity and age-ability of the best Priorat, the price difference and immediate accessibility of Montsant makes it a great gateway.  Sourced from several districts within the appellation and from vines that range in age from 10-45 years, the components of Buil & Gine’s savory and delicious Montsant are assembled and the wine is aged in American oak barrels for approximately six months.  The resulting wine is bright and spicy with a silky texture and vibrant finish.  The barrel age gives it a polished veneer that balances beautifully with the concentration of red fruits and exotic spices.  It’s not a big wine, but it is one that will play nicely with a host of Mediterranean-inspired cuisine, from grilled meats to roast vegetables and rustic cheeses.  Even seafood with a touch of spice would be a good food pairing.  Let your imagination roam and enjoy this sumptuous Montsant throughout the summer and fall months. Drinks great!
