Nardi’s 2018 Brunello di Montalcino is a juicy, fruit-forward wine that shows the breed of the vintage, the advantages of a cooler microclimate and the class for which Emilia’s wines are justly famous. More immediately striking than the more intense but far more reticent Manachiara, the so-called Brunello ‘Normale’ is packed with intense fruit that shows Sangiovese’s darker, cooler, almost blueberry side with already complex layers of cedar chest, minty chocolate, iron filings and buttery-rich brown leather. The wine shows this famous harvest’s more elegant side with a sense of sophistication and polish that gives way to some still-youthful tannins that promise a nice long life ahead. Drink, well-decanted, with a perfectly-grilled ribeye or hold much longer and watch it grow into what we all love—mature Brunello!
