A Villero Barolo will always impress for its distinctive, almost exotic aromatics and formidable structure. The studious, meticulous Achille Boroli began realizing his personal version of Villero after joining the Boroli family grape-growing business (dating back to 1831) in 1997, finally taking over the reins of the cellar completely in 2012.

In 2019, he produced a benchmark for the vineyard and it remains a favorite. It’s a heavyweight that will reward even more cellaring—perhaps a lot more. The Villero’s commanding tannins still form a wall across the finish of the wine, but they’ve grown into themselves and are rounding into form while the fruit has blossomed along with all of Villero’s cinnamon, camphor and plum skin-blueberry aromatics. It’s a dark, broad and beefy wine with exuberant fennel seed, iron oxide and cedar notes on the palate and a very appealing, quite pliant texture.
