A young winery that’s very much on the lips of everyone in the Langhe, the young brother-sister combo Alberto and Caterina Burzi’s cellar is in an innocuous-looking building off the Santa Maria parking lot, just across the street from Osteria Vignaiolo, everyone’s favorite lunch spot in La Morra.  But it’s not the cellar you go to see; it’s the vineyards that surround this wide spot in the road that make it worth the visit.  Not only do the Burzis passionately and organically farm a marvelous very old parcel in Capelot, just above Santa Maria, from which they bottle a delicious single-vineyard Barolo, they also work tiny pieces of land in Rive, Roncaglia and Rocchettevino, all distinguished La Morra MGAs in their own right with vines that range in age from 25 to 70.  While the Burzis make two bright, fresh Barolos, it’s their stunningly delicious Barbera d’Alba that will be a wonderful introduction to this marvelous up-and-coming property.  This is a dark, juicy Barbera with a ton of glossy black plum and cherry fruit and a background of very vibrant, very fresh acidity. As easy-going as the laconic but always smiling Alberto, it’s a ton of fun to drink all on its own and a killer combination with all kinds of pasta dishes, burgers and just about everything else.  This could be our house wine!
