Never heard of Col di Lamo?  Neither, frankly, had we. It’s very, very tiny, and the small amount of Col di Lamo Brunello (and its brilliant orange label) made usually never makes it far from Tuscany.  But it bears some consideration, we thought, as it turns out the property was carved out of the perfectly-situated Montalcino vineyards originally part of the Casanova di Neri estate.  When the Giovanni Neri, who originally had developed the property, passed away, the estate vineyards were split between son Giacomo and daughter Gianna.  Giacomo took over running Casanova di Neri and Gianna, with the other half, created Col di Lamo.  Conceived from the beginning to be a woman-run estate, Gianna now runs it with daughter Diletta and it has remained very small and very much under the radar while Casanova di Neri has, as everyone knows, gone Super Nova. And you can tell the difference not so much in the wine but in the price tag.  Col di Lamo is roughly half the price of even the least expensive Casanova di Neri Brunello- even though the vineyards are adjacent and the approach to the winemaking virtually the same.  Stylistically, the wines are not dissimilar, emphasizing aromatic complexity, pure, expressive fruit, nicely done wood and sweet, round tannins.  What separates the two is the charm and elegance we found in this Col di Lamo bottling. There was great lift, great freshness and a sense of weight without heaviness.  What a lovely discovery!  The only problem is that we were only able to get a paltry amount of wine, barely enough to justify writing this offer!  Still, if you are a fan of Casanova di Neri and similar Brunellos, this is a wine you will be happy to have in the cellar!  We think it’s very fairly priced and a lot less than we’ve seen it for elsewhere in the USA.  Cellar for a while.  In stock.

Vinous Media: A brilliant ruby color in the glass, the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino wafts up with a classic bouquet of bright cherries and Tuscan dust complicated by dried roses and worn leather. This is silky smooth yet lifted in style with a measured inner sweetness and crisp red berry fruits that cascade throughout. Fresh acidity maintains a lovely balance as the 2019 finishes gently tannic and with a youthful tension. This is a remarkably pretty Brunello from Col di Lamo. 93 points
