Vinous, 94 points: The 2019 Barolo Riserva Perno Vigna Disa ventures into the realm of exotic. It emerges from the oldest vines on the property in a south-facing block planted entirely with Lampia clone Nebbiolo.  Red berry fruit, spice, blood orange, spice and iron all meld together in the glass. The 2019 needs time to come together. Despite the wine’s mid-weight, classically leaning structure, there is a touch of new oak influence from a cask that was new at the time. Drink 2029-2044.

Elio Sandri makes some of the most idiosyncratic wines in all of Piedmont. The decidedly old-school cellar is a throwback to simpler, less prosperous times when things were much more rustic than they are today. Sandri’s firm, massively structured Barolos will delight readers who admire virile, potent wines. At a time when so many Barolos are approachable with minimal cellaring, these remain wines that demand cellaring.
