Let’s finish our tour of the Southern Hemisphere in South Australia.  Kilikanoon is located in the town of Penwortham, situated in the rolling hills of the Clare Valley, just a two-hour drive north through the much warmer Barossa Valley from Adelaide.  The winery is owned, managed and otherwise inspired by Kevin Mitchell, with plenty of kibitzing from his father, Mort.  Established in 1997, Kevin set out to craft wines that take advantage of the incredible variety of micro-climates and soil differences that exist in this cooler region of South Australia; cooler because of its elevation and the dramatic diurnal shift between warm daytime temperatures and cool nighttime temps. Kevin and Mort have certainly accomplished their goals, producing an incredible lineup of wines, from everyday values to rare collectibles.  Some of their cuvees may be familiar to you, such as their much-coveted Watervale Riesling and 100-point getting Oracle Shiraz, Prodigal Grenache and Blocks Road Cabernet.  We are particularly fond of the Mitchells’ Killerman’s Run portfolio, a range of wines produced for more immediate enjoyment and priced accordingly.  The 2019 Killerman’s Run Cabernet Sauvignon is a case in point, sourced from their holdings up and down the Clare Valley.  Grown at elevations between 300 and 600 meters and coming from the relatively cool 2019 vintage, the wine is very stylish, nicely balanced but with plenty of horsepower.  Aging in new and used French barrels for 16 months adds another layer of glamour and richness, making the wine eminently approachable right now but with enough horsepower to benefit from further bottle age.  Finished with a screw top closure, like so many wines from Australia, we recommend giving the wine a bit of air before serving.  This is mighty delicious stuff that offers up a whole lot more polish and elan than most of the Cabernet-based wines we see costing twice, three times or more
