We truly love old-school Brunello like this—intense but elegant, inward-looking and slow to reveal its charms. Each year, Podere Brizio makes some of the most tightly wound wines in the Brunello DOCG, wines that demand patience and don’t readily wear their hearts on their sleeve. Located on a southwest-facing hilltop from which you can see the coast, Brizio farms 11 hectares of vines in a cooler spot that yields intensely fruited, very dark Sangiovese with great natural acidity and fine definition. The wines are fermented on their natural yeast in stainless steel and aged only in large-format wood. Built for long-term cellaring, the 2019 that has fallen into our hands at a great price has just begun its long climb to maturity and, with decanting, will even reward opening tonight.

That being said, if it were me, I’d sure save a few bottles for opening further down the road when this lovely, very polished offering will show its best. We’ve been able to obtain only a small amount at this amazing price and it will go soon.

Wine Spectator, 95 points: Black cherry, blackberry, plum, violet and mineral flavors are the hallmarks of this pure, dense and robust red, which is squarely in the fruity camp, yet bumps up against pointed tannins on the finish. The lasting impression is both fruit and tannins, so this should work itself out in a few years. Best from 2027 through 2043.

Wine Advocate, 94+ points: The organic Podere Brizio 2019 Brunello di Montalcino (in a heavy glass bottle) shows pretty aromas of crushed stone, dried raspberry, redcurrant, cherry cola and blue flower. The elegance and finer qualities of this wine are what stand out most, and you get pretty definition and sharpness along the way. The finish is lean, tonic, lifted and bright. Great job. Drink 2025-2040.
