This is one of those crazy things that happen every once in a while. When iconic Montalcino producer Tenuta di Sesta was asked by their American importer to produce a bottling of their famed Brunello di Montalcino to be used only at restaurants, they happily obliged. It would be the same wine as their terrific Brunello, only priced much better so that restaurants could get the wine into people’s hands far more affordably. They took a small portion of their production and labeled it Notedincanto (A Note of Enchantment!) with some pretty sweet artwork to help make it jump from the list. It was a great idea, but, as we all now know, timed very poorly. Being a 2016, it hit the market in the spring of 2020, exactly as the American restaurant market (along with every other restaurant market in the world) went into deep hibernation, leaving the cantina with several pallets of excellent but labeled-for-export-to-America wine sitting there unsold. What if, we wondered, a few quality-oriented retailers (guilty as charged!) took some of this wine and put it into the hands of a few Brunello-loving consumers, passing along, of course, that great price? Wouldn’t that make everyone happy!? It was an amazing opportunity, and we took full advantage- and do did you. There were many of you who purchased multiple cases of that 2016 and were left asking for more. At the time, we believed that wine was a one-off but, hey, if it worked once, maybe it would work a second time, right? In the spectacular 2019 vintage, the wine was made again and, again, the anticipated restaurant sales never happened. Good thing we are here! This is Tenuta di Sesta Brunello for $40 a bottle! The wine is sourced from one of the higher, cooler, more windswept sites in Montalcino- at 400 meters- and is made as traditionally as it gets. It’s a tightly-wound style of Sangiovese with buttery leather, bramble and mint chocolate notes adding complexity to a solid core of cool cherry and wild berry fruit. An excellent, classically-styled 2019, it drinks well decanted right now (accent on ‘decanted’) but will reward further cellaring too. This very fine value is, alas, limited to 48 bottles. First come- first served!  Bistecca this weekend! Pass it on. This vintage even got reviewed:

James Suckling: Very pretty aromas with cherries, red fruits, bark, cedar and sandalwood. Medium-bodied but grows on the palate with chewy tannins and a savory and juicy finish. Succulent yet tannic. Needs time to come together. Drink after 2026. 94 points
