2020 Bodegas Borsao ‘Tres Picos’ Campo de Borja  $18.99 per bottle

Behold!  It’s the return of the Spanish delicacy we at PRIMA have always called ‘Tres Tacos;’ Bodegas Borsao’s highly addictive, thoroughly scrumptious Tres Picos Garnacha!  It was some maybe 15 years ago when longtime PRIMA member, the late, great David Perry, first coined this wine’s nickname, and it wasn’t long before the wine and its alternative moniker became fixtures here.  Revered for its sheer drinkability and stunning value, every time we promoted the wine, we’d sell out almost immediately, and it wasn’t long before everyone around here was clamoring for Tres Tacos!  But things change, and, due to a shakeup at Borsao’s importer, we stopped seeing it.  After crying ourselves to sleep a few times, time did what time does, and the Tres Picos Garnacha sort of drifted from our collective consciousness. Fast forward, though, a decade or so, and a random conversation with Borsao’s current importer that led to a sample bottle of Tres Picos showing up on our doorstep.  Frank, Brandon and I (the veterans on the staff) were so excited to see it again; even more so to have the opportunity to pass this piece of PRIMA’s past onto a new generation of the Vini team!  And you!  Yes, it was a Tres Tacos Tuesday for us all! The wine?  It’s 100% Garnacha (Grenache) from very high altitude vines from the three peaks (the real Tres Picos, the ones on the label) of the Campo de Borja in the northeastern part of Spain.  Hand harvested and lovingly handled, these old vines are fashioned into a deep, dark aromatic mélange of ripe red fruits, plums, florals and a bit of unlit pipe tobacco.  The truly addicting part of Tres Picos is its broad, silky texture- the essence of pure Grenache. Its fruit is seamless, and there’s a richness and energy to it that just flows over the palate.  No.  It’s not known for its complexity, and you won’t confuse it with, say, Chateauneuf du Pape anytime soon. But, then again, why would you want to?  It’s so lively, so savory and so delicious, you won’t even have time to compare it to anything else before the bottle gets empty.  And the best part- the ultimate enduring attribute that made it such a PRIMA favorite- is the price!  How can anything so good cost only $18?  Nobody does value better than Spain.  We recommend you sample a Taco or three for yourself.
