2020 Ca’ di Press Barolo Perno
$74.99 with shipping included on 3 or more bottles – VERY LIMITED
As you know, it’s our job (and our pleasure) to keep our noses constantly to the ground- well, soil- in search of wine families who are doing things the right way, making ground-breaking wines and seem destined for future greatness. Several years ago, my (formidable) nose uncovered
Ca’ di Press. I first detected the buzz of a group of young winemakers around the Barolo region who ranked this tiny operation at the top of their ‘keep an eye on them’ lists, and then came a groundswell of smart Barolo buyers in Switzerland and Northern Europe who quickly jumped on the bandwagon, posting about Ca’di Press on Social Media after tasting the wines in Italy. Curious, I made it a point this past fall to seek out the 2020 Barolo Perno that everyone was talking about myself, and came away very impressed too. Yes, Ca’ di Press is definitely going to be on a lot of people’s lips over the coming years…especially since their 2021, coming out this fall, is going to be one of the top scoring Barolos of this much-ballyhooed harvest. I’m pleased to say, we’ve been able to finally source Ca’ di Press here in California so you, too, can finally find out what all the fuss is about. The thing is about the best of these ‘new’ producers, is that they’re usually not new at all. The name Ca’ di Press is Piemontese dialect for the ‘House of Pressenda,’ a family affair that’s actually over 125 years old. The Pressendas were grape growers for three generations before the first vintage of Ca’ di Press was born in 2018, selling the fruit they farmed on the Perno ridgenear Monforte d’Alba to several other well-known cantinas. It was only when Bruno Pressenda’s two daughters, Alice and Cristina, took an interest in the family business that the decision was made to become winemakers as well as farmers. Their property is small. They farm 7.5 hectares but keep only 3 of them for their own use, and, in the most optimistic of vintages, the Barolo production will be all of 7000 bottles. Thanks to their site’s excellent exposure and altitude at the top of the Perno ridge in the sweet spot of the Perno MgA, it’s small but mighty too. The 2020 impressed us with its rich, almost voluptuous plummy, Bing cherry fruit that creates a lovely, soft impression even though it has to cover an armature of Perno’s always high acidity and sinewy tannins. Leaning towards the cedar-camphor end of the aromatic spectrum with more spices than florals, there is a solid core that promises further development. But, really, the charm of this precocious 2020 is in its early accessibility and the purity of its expression. What a joy to drink and an excellent introduction to a property we think will soon be at the top of pyramid! Only 24 bottles to share…….
