What do you do when your spouse insists on great White Burgundy but you’re too cheap to spend an arm and a leg to keep peace in the family?  The obvious answer is to buy Macon Village and lie about the price.  With a wine like the 2020 Sylvaine & Alain Normand Macon La Roche Vineuse, you are more than likely to get away with it because the wine is so complex and delicious.  Made by a husband and wife team, from their 35 hectares spread out among the best villages of the region, this is wonderful Chardonnay from a world-class winegrowing region.  The domaine is at the forefront of ‘eco-friendly’ viticulture in the Roche-Vineuse district and have been awarded the Haute Valeur Environmentale designation for their efforts.  They do not use any herbicides or pesticides in their beautifully situated vineyards, planted in the clay/limestone soil of the appellation.  Their approach to winemaking is equally sensitive, harvesting by hand, using native yeasts, fermenting in temperature-controlled tanks and aging the wine in contact with the lees.  All that adds up to one amazing White Burgundy that should cost a lot more than $23.99.  The 2020 Normand La Roche Vineuse has the stony minerality of well-made Macon, with a touch of fresh citrus and a rounded texture that caresses the palate.  It’s quite easy to pair with your favorite comfort foods and all too easy to drink an entire bottle at one sitting.  Of course, there could be worse things in the world, like your wife discovering what you actually paid for the wine.  I won’t tell if you won’t.
