This next wine, the 2021 Rosso della Motta, is a real gem, sourced from old vines (70-80 years of age), grown at high elevation in Alta Piemonte, the Coste della Sesia appellation to be more specific. It’s closest neighbors that you might recognize are Lessona, Gattinara and Ghemme, all Nebbiolo-based wines that unfortunately live in the shadow of Barolo and Barbaresco to the south. Still, the Nebbiolo from this region, planted on largely glacial soils, composed of volcanic rock, sand and clay, are beautifully structured, aromatic wines that deserve more recognition. Castello di Castellengo, owned by Magda and Alessandro Ciccioni, is one of the progressive wineries that might change all that. Farming organically on their small estate, complete with an 18th century castle, Magda honors the winemaking traditions of the region but with a modernist’s view. The Rosso della Motta is a perfect example of her philosophy, bright and fresh, with layers of fruit that beautifully express the terroir of the surrounding hillsides. Despite the firm acidity, a hallmark of Nebbiolo, the wine is very approachable, not to mention unbelievably priced. It is well below what you’d expect to pay for a classy, Piemontese red. Serve it to your most finicky guests and you’re certain to impress them with your wine savvy and nose for value. Grazie mille!
