The Dominus Estate was conceived to bring the authentic flavor of Bordeaux to Napa Valley and, you could argue, it has succeeded beyond anyone’s wildest dreams. There are plenty of people in Bordeaux who, I think, wish they could produce Dominus! The very definition of polish, complexity, grace and longevity, ironically, this Bordeaux wannabe has become a true California original!

The historic Napanook Vineyard, a 124-acre site west of Yountville, was planted in 1838 and has been the source of fruit for some of California’s most historic wines. The eponymous wine from the estate is the Napanook red. More than just Dominus’ second label, it’s a complete wine in its own right.

The 2021 was produced from 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. The very definition of finesse, it’s deep, dark, fragrant and complete. We love the Brave New World price we’re getting!

James Suckling, 97 points: This shows a lot of class, with aromas of blackcurrants, graphite, blueberries, dried flowers, black truffles and a touch of forest floor. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, with seamless tannins that go on and on. Endless. Blackcurrants, dark mushrooms and violets with hints of fresh rose stems and light herbs. Velvety texture.

Jeb Dunnuck, 95 points: The 2021 Napanook is one heck of a Napanook, offering complex notes of currants, cassis, graphite, leafy tobacco, lead pencil, and chocolate. Incredible on the palate, it's full-bodied and round, with supple, vibrant, incredible tannins. This is easily the finest vintage I've tasted of this cuvée and it's the equivalent of many a Grand Vin from other producers.

Wine Advocate, 94 points: Certainly the best Napanook bottling I can recall, the 2021 Napanook is a 3,000-case blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Boasting harmonious aromas of raspberries, red and black cherries, cinnamon, clove and dusty earth notes, this full-bodied wine tips the scales at a declared 15% alcohol, yet it shows no detectable heat. It is full-bodied, intense, rich and velvety, with hints of black tea on the long finish. Matured in 20% new French oak, it stands out for its lush mouthfeel and savory complexity.

Decanter, 94 points: A delicately aromatic nose of red currants, spicebush, tobacco leaf, dusty minerals, and wildflowers. The palate is compact with a wonderful medium- to full-bodied mouthfeel and plenty of energy and drive. The acidity is firm and inviting, forming a perfect backbone that preserves the wine's freshness. The tannins are satiny with a mocha-scented quality, and the red berry fruit is laced with salty minerals. The wine is impressively tension-filled, vivacious and yet light on its feet. A terrific effort.
