We were pleased to count nearly two cases more of the 2020 Vieux Telegraphe Chateauneuf du Pape at our recent inventory. Hurray! This is the same wine that made headlines late last year by being named Wine Spectator magazine’s #7 Wine of the Year! It’s a bold, large-and-in-charge 2020 with an amazingly voluptuous mouthfeel and the armature to last many, many years in the cellar. To those of us who know and love V-T, it bears an uncanny resemblance to the winery’s seminal 1998, a velvet glove on an iron fist. If you didn’t get what you wanted at the end of last year, now is your shot! But what of the recently arrived 2021? If the 2020 reminds one of 1998, this brand new release is far closer, we think, to the legendary 1978, a V-T that is still at the peak of its powers. Made from 65% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, 15% Syrah and the remaining 5% comprised of Cinsault, Clairette and the other local grapes of the region, it’s an ultra-important 2021 southern Rhone release and as impressive a follow-up to the 2020 as you can imagine; a smokin’ good wine. The vintage, though. is markedly different in character to 2020, in every good way. Classic in every sense of the word, the alcohol and ripeness levels are more restrained and the structure seems more pronounced at this stage. Dark, cool, subtle and dusky (as opposed to the immediate ebullience of the 2020), the aromatics, even at this young moment of its life, are sensational and the palate, albeit more introverted at this young stage, is pure La Crau! This is an elegant, sophisticated Vieux Telegraph for the ages and an incredible encore to last vintage’s triumph. Interesting to note that the Wine Spectator has already scored this 2021 higher than last year’s #7 WOY. Can we expect an even higher result in 2025????
Wine Advocate on the 2021: Delicate aromas of spices, licorice, garrigue, dark berries and dark cherries preface the 2021 Chateauneuf du Pape La Crau, a medium to full-bodied, layered and textured Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It is framed around velvety, elegant tannins, with good depth at the core and a pure, precise texture that segues into a long, delicate and ethereal finish. Superb! Drink date: 2024–2044. 95 points
Wine Spectator on the 2021: An alluring perfume of red currant and dried cherry is followed by earth tones of warm chestnut, wet leaves, brown bread and pepper, all built upon a plank of solid iron. There’s a bloody, meaty edge to the palate, which is still tightly wound up by fine, persistent tannins. Incense smoke and mineral notes bounce along the lengthy finish. Elegant in spite of its weight and stature. Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Cinsault. 95 points
