We love the wine’s effusive, only-in-Santa Barbara personality. Its dark, dusky fruit reminds one, in every good way, of cherry cola, black Assam tea hot from the pot and freshly turned loam with a scattering of pink rose petals strewn on top. Intense and spicy, this is the kind of elegant, layered Pinot that will also appeal to Burgundy lovers alongside a menu with lamb, beef or wild mushrooms with plenty of herbs. Those combinations will please everyone! It’s a serious Pinot in its drinking window but also one you could keep.

Wine Enthusiast, 96 points: Black cherry, cola and vanilla-cream flavors draw the nose deeply into this special block-designated bottling from a historic site. A firm texture and sizzling acidity provide a textural backdrop to the ripe flavors of red fruit and red flowers, with a pinch of mace adding spice. The finish goes deep.

Jeb Dunnuck, 95 points: Ripe black raspberries, tart cherries, spring flowers, violets, and a hint of leather all emerge from the 2021 Pinot Noir Block 43 Bien Nacido Vineyard, a riveting Pinot Noir that has a focused, elegant mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a terrific sense of purity, precision, and length.
