Lazzarito is a very special spot that, thanks to its multiple exposures and heterogeneous soils, captures the very essence of what makes Serralunga d'Alba such a special place for Nebbiolo, and Porro is one of its most important producers. The 2021 Barolo Vigna Santa Catarina could serve as a primer on the many attributes of this very special spot: its combination of elegance and power, the sumptuous, yet pointed aromatics and its wines’ ability to age effortlessly for decades. And, of course, there’s the fact that it’s a 2021, one of the most complete vintages the area has ever had. T

he southern and southwest exposures of Lazzarito are known for producing prodigiously rich wines and this Barolo definitely does not disappoint in that regard! It’s a heady wine that bursts with intense but lifted mentholated cherry fruit followed by notes of cinnamon, cardamom, balsam, espresso and sweet herbs that lead to a weighty palate that surprises at the end for its freshness and the nicely articulated tannins which stick out now but will meld as time goes on. There is so much oomph here, but the wine is beautifully balanced and never comes off as heavy or overly tannic. And, yeah sure, it’s going to need some time to show its best but that’s the beauty of 2021—the wines taste so good right now! This is one of our favorite wines to date from the commune of Serralunga, and we’re more than pleased at the price.

Wine Enthusiast, 97 points: Structured and loaded with finesse, the 2021 V.S. Caterina from Guido Porro entices with aromas of camphor, forest floor, hay and ripe dark-skinned fruit. Made with 40-45-year-old vines with southwest exposure in the Lazzarito MGA in Serralunga, it's full-bodied, with layers of succulent Morello cherry, cinnamon, truffle orange peel and licorice. A minty note lingers on the finish while firm, refined tannins and fresh acidity provide support and balance. Drink 2031–2041.

Vinous, 95 points: The 2021 Barolo V.S. Caterina is a rich, expansive wine. Crushed flowers, sweet pipe tobacco, menthol, coffee, licorice and dried herbs all soar from the glass. Medium in body, but also quite plush, the 2021 has so much to offer. It's a wine of pure and total seduction.
