The III means that three varieties are used to create the cuvee, and in 2021 they are Merlot (76%), Petite Sirah (13%) and Cabernet Sauvigon (11%). The wine gets its distinctive personality from the gorgeous Blueline Vineyard Merlot grown on the east side of the Silverado Trail—dark, packed with berries and very, very polished, it’s some sexy stuff. Petite Sirah adds a bass note of pungency, tannin, color and a darker cooler aspect while the rich currant and mineral portion is pure Hourglass Vineyard Cab along with a bit, we’re told, Grace Family Vineyards Cab as well! The wine is broad, intense and silky on the palate—a fabulous, characterful wine already—but the hint of herb, iron and mineral promise that this will be a wonderful wine to revisit in a few years too.
