Mastroberardino, the iconic producer from Campania, is justifiably recognized as the property that single-handedly brought the appellation back to life after WWII and raised the quality and reputation of the entire region in the process. Their portfolio of wines is very comprehensive, including all the regional wines you might expect from this part of southern Italy: red, white, rosé and dessert, made from indigenous varietals that thrive in the Mediterranean climate.

The ’Mastro’ Aglianico, part of their value lineup, is grown in vineyards of calcareous clay situated at 350 meters above sea level. The low-yielding vines enjoy a southeastern exposure, where they happily absorb the sunshine and translate it to dark, rich wine. Aglianico has been described as ‘Barolo of the south’ but to our palates, it typically has a more fiery, rugged disposition.

‘Mastro’, however, shows a softer, juicier, refreshingly approachable side of the grape. It will provide excellent service at your dinner table, especially with meaty stews and strong cheeses. It’s the sort of wine you want around for everyday enjoyment while you’re waiting for Mastroberardino’s big guns, ‘Radici’ Taurasi and Taurasi Riserva, to mature. Made with the same incredibly high standards, ‘Mastro’ is a bona fide deal and not to be missed.
