2021 Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric del Fiasc, Castiglione Falletto Pre-Arrival $108, magnums $250

Still the cantina’s signature wine, this cuvee still comes 100% from the ridiculously steep Fiasco cru in Castiglione Falletto. A firmer, more structured wine than the open, beautifully articulated 2020, this is a throwback to the 2010, a wine that it is only now truly rounding into form. Our recommendation will be to cellar this stunner another five or so years and drink it through its twentieth anniversary and beyond. A 2001 BdF tasted this past Sunday was breathtaking! This might be even better…. JS97, WE99, V94+

Wine Spectator: This red is saturated with pure cherry notes, plus hints of blackberry and plum, along with stony mineral, earth and wild herb accents. Starts out rich and supple in texture but gains density and structure by the long finish. Shows terrific balance and complexity. Best from 2029 through 2050. 97 points

2021 Paolo Scavino Barolo Bricco Ambrogio, Roddi Pre-Arrival $68, magnums $165

Big time wine! Consider this the coming out party for this Roddi cuvee. It’s a wonderful site with perfect exposure and its cooler climate makes for a more elegant, open and charming expression of Barolo. Immaculate, stylish and a wine you can enjoy in its relative youth too. We loved the 2020, but this is the best-ever Ambrogio from Scavino, and perhaps the wine that will start a land rush here similar to that of Monvigliero six or eight years ago. JS97, WE97, V96, WA94

Wine Spectator: Rich and permeated with cherry, pomegranate, earth, wild herb and iron flavors, this red is dense and powerful. Firm, chalky tannins ply its depths, leaving a solid grip on the finish, yet the fruit is ripe and the aftertaste long, with sweet fruit returning at the end. Best from 2027 through 2048. 96 points

2021 Paolo Scavino Barolo Monvigliero, Verduno Pre-Arrival $85, magnums $205

So sexy! This has been a favorite of ours since the amazing 2016. Another very fragrant, polished Movig that drinks more like a fine Burgundy than a robust young Barolo. Excellent length and a seductive palate that will beguile for many years. Intriguing as always. JS96, WE98, V94, WA94

Wine Spectator: This red is all about finesse, its silky texture a foil for cherry, raspberry, floral and mineral flavors. There is a solid base of tannins and lively acidity driving the long, fruit-filled aftertaste. Even now, this is charming and harmonious, with complexity and class. Best from 2028 through 2045. 95 points

2021 Paolo Scavino Barolo Prapo, Serralunga d’Alba Pre-Arrival $81, magnums $190

A beautifully balanced, downright crunchy Prapo that shows this Serralunga terroir in vivid relief. Love the definition of the fruit. Grippy young tannins and that bit of lovely acidity set this one apart. A keeper, this is reminiscent of the 2016 and the sleeper in the lineup that will start to show its best at ten years or so past the harvest. JS95, WE97, V96, WA95

Wine Spectator: A brilliant red, whose cherry, raspberry, floral and fresh-cut hay aromas and flavors are expressive and fresh. Its structure is firm and dense, with fine-grained tannins and typical Serralunga tension. Harmonious but needs time to integrate, with a lingering, fruit- and mineral-tinged finish. Best from 2029 through 2050. 96 points

2021 Paolo Scavino Barolo Ravera, Novello Pre-Arrival $81, magnums $190

Many say that this is the vintage that Ravera will hit the big time! The 2021s from this large, perfectly-exposed Novello site have been, to a wine, so far extraordinary. Big and sinewy, this has all the salinity and baking spices one associates with Ravera and hitherto unseen gravitas. It certainly is a cellar candidate. JS95, V95, WA95

Wine Spectator: Rich and saturated with cherry, plum, earth, tar and iron flavors, this red is muscular and bursting with energy. Tightens up on the finish, yet there's plenty of fruit and complexity, with great balance and a lingering aftertaste. Best from 2030 through 2050. 95 points

2021 Paolo Scavino Barolo Bussia-Vigna Fantini, Monforte d’Alba Pre-Arrival $81, magnums $190

Va va voom! Brand new from Scavino, Fantini is a truly vaunted site within Bussia and this debut is turning heads everywhere! Big and beefy, this is a classic Bussia Barolo and one that will last ages! JS98, V96, WA96

Wine Spectator: This red starts out round, with density and flavors of plum, black cherry, earth, tobacco and eucalyptus. Assertive, chalky tannins emerge as this builds on the palate, leaving a dry, tactile finish. Backward and will need at least five years to come together. Best from 2030 through 2053. 95 points

2019 Paolo Scavino Barolo Riserva Rocche dell’Annunziata, La Morra Pre-Arrival $235, magnums $520

People call Rocche the La Tache of Barolo for its ability to produce wines of incomparable finesse and longevity and the Scavinos produce theirs only in the best vintages. This, simply put, is profound, but requiring a lot of cellaring to see it at its best. This is a ripe, well-filled Rocche, though, with impressive depth and a lot of class! JS98, V96+, W97

Wine Spectator: An intense version, boasting cherry, black currant, plum, earth and iron aromas and flavors, with underlying accents of eucalyptus and rosemary. Firm and balanced, showing some development. Vibrant acidity corrals the lingering finish, and this remains complex and enticing. Approachable now, this red will benefit from another year or two of aging. Best from 2027 through 2046. From Italy. 97 points
