Penfold’s, Australia’s most iconic winery, is having a large scale sale this month and we’re lucky enough to have gotten in on the fun!  This means there is crazy pricing on gems like the Bin 389 Cab-Shiraz and the Bin 28 Shiraz, both of which will be offered next week.  But craziest of all?  Penfolds’ Max’s delicious South Australia Shiraz and delectable Adelaide Hills Chardonnay. The Max’s line was created as a tribute to the legendary Max Schubert, the longtime Penfolds winemaker responsible for the creation of the Grange Hermitage and many of the other iconic bottlings that created this seminal winery’s sterling reputation.  With access to some of Australia’s best fruit, the Max’s range is designed to take advantage of all that largesse while providing more immediate accessibility and affordability than with the Bin series.  The Chardonnay is sourced from the cool Adelaide Hills, sees a little (but not a lot) of oak in its aging, and is impeccably balanced with citrusy hints of lemon crème brulee and grapefruit as well as a bit of cashew and spice on a mid- to full-weight frame that finishes with a nice mineral component. It’s a major crowd pleaser that will do wonderful service as a house white or for a big summer gathering.  A case will be easy to go through, so consider two or three.  The same goes for the Shiraz, a massive overachiever even at $25 a bottle.  No one does it better than these guys!  Dark, rich and robust, this is pure Penfolds in its underlying power and dusky, almost brooding dark berry and plum fruit.  Like all Penfolds reds, it’s beautifully wooded, deeply pitched and very complex but will drink well even now.  This will be a big hit at your next barbecue!
