Because it is often the first major Cabernet Sauvignon to be released in a given vintage, Caymus Vineyards is viewed as a bellwether for the quality of a given harvest. True to form, the Caymus 2022 Napa Cabernet, a special bottling honoring the winery’s half-century anniversary, was released from the winery June 1st, months ahead of most of its competition, and, true to form, they’ve set a very high bar indeed! It’s as big, flashy and fun as ever. Caymus traditionally harvests its grapes on the (very) late side and prides itself on its refined, velvety mature tannins which always frame a decadent core of rich chocolate-powder and vanilla infused plum-berry fruit. And our evaluation of the 2022 revealed just that; a classic Caymus Cab with a round, plush texture and tons and tons of flavor. The bouquet is a lively mélange of plum compote, chocolate, Kirsch and vanilla bean and the palate has an easy-to-love softness that neatly hides some real tannins and good acidity. How do they do this every year?
