“The 2022 is so pretty with violet and dried rose perfume right out of the chute. Bright cherries and blueberries join darker cassis and plum flavors for delightful complexity. Provençal herbs, anise and wet-stone mineral notes join in the fun.” – Cathy Corison

As I’ve said here before, when winemaker Cathy Corison speaks, we listen. Cathy is one of the smartest, most intuitive and most experienced winegrowers with whom we’ve ever had the pleasure of working, and she also possesses one of the surest and most distinctive winemaking touches in the Napa Valley. With more than 45 vintages in the Napa Valley (and 36 at Corison) under her belt, she has seen and done it all, and when Cathy, who is not one to overstate things, raves about her 2022 Cabernet and calls it one of the best she’s made, we have to believe it.

Always a benchmark for the more lithe and traditional school of understated Napa Valley Cab, her 2022 comes from a harvest that survived the infamous Labor Day heat spike and September rain to produce deeply concentrated fruit packed with flavor and character. It is exactly what Cathy had hoped for, and she made a wine that is all polish, nuance, depth and class. Seemingly cut from obsidian and polished to a fine finish, it’s dark, complex and rich with lifted currant, plum, graphite and wet earth aromatics on a palate of black silk. Underneath lies an armature of fine acidity and tannin, enough to promise this could be another Corison for the ages!

While a Corison Cab will never be the biggest, baddest boy on the block—it still hovers under 14% ABV—its confident elegance and persistence reminds one more of Margaux than the Napa Valley floor, and, to me, that’s an excellent thing.

A toast to one of the world’s greatest women in wine, and one of our great friends.

Wine Enthusiast, 95 points: With signature poise and persistence, Corison 2022 Cabernet captures the opportunities of a challenging vintage, showing both her skill as a winemaker and the strength of her vineyards. Lifted, fresh aromatics spin into flavors of dark fruits touched by espresso grounds, dry cocoa, and juicy finish. Tannins are approachable now, and will benefit from a meal, or several years in bottle.

Decanter, 95 points: Aged for 20 months in French oak barrels, 50% of which were new, this wine is tart and racy, with a red-toned fruit profile complemented by saline-mineral intensity on the nose and palate. Aromas of leather, green olive, and cherrywood add complexity. The palate is immediately enveloped by multidimensional tannins with a pixelated quality, arresting the senses before giving way to sanguine fruit and vibrant minerality. The finish is layered with notes of blood orange, citrus peel, sandalwood, and loamy earth. A testament to the winery, a Napa Valley staple since it opened its doors in 1987, this wine showcases precision and depth in every sip.

James Suckling, 93 points: A bold and deep expression, packed with blackberries, blackcurrants, dark chocolate, black olives, dark earth and licorice. The full-bodied, dense and fruit-driven palate carries fine-grained tannins and is balanced with bright acidity, finishing with hints of mocha and wet stones.
