2022 Domaine de Panisse Chateauneuf-du-Pape 'Le Mas', Rhone Valley

Only 200 cases were imported to the States, and we feel so fortunate (and grateful!) to have gotten 4 of those cases just for PRIMA.

The younger generation at Le Clos du Caillou as of 2020 purchased a spectacular property north of the family estate in Courthézon. The winery is made up of a 15th-century farmhouse (the ‘mas’) and cellars, surrounded by some 16 acres of prime Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards in the far northeast corner of the appellation. With many vines planted in 1924 and terroir that echoes Châteauneuf’s finest, winemaker Marilou Vacheron and her brother Axel are more than well-positioned to craft seriously compelling and character-rich southern Rhône blends.

Aged mostly in large wooden demi-muids and just a bit in older small French oak barrels.

Tons of critical acclaim for this wine!

Wine Advocate, 95 points: A brilliant wine in the making, the 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Le Mas exhales deep, elegant aromas of violet, lilac, dark cherries and garrigue, followed by a medium- to full-bodied, round and gourmand palate enhanced by velvety tannins, bright acids and a fleshy core of fruit that leads the way to a long, peppery and savory finish. This is a blend of 55% Grenache, 25% Mourvèdre, 15% Syrah and 5% Cinsault, all planted on La Janasse lieu-dit.

James Suckling, 93 points: A subtle, elegant and juicy red with notes of sweet berries, warm spices and Mediterranean herbs. Medium-bodied with fine tannins. Juicy and fruit-forward with elegance and freshness. Playful and refreshing finish. Drink or hold.

Wine Spectator, 92 points: This is full-bodied yet carries a racy edge, with juicy acidity driving licorice and cherry dusted with spices. Chalky mineral notes bring an earthy depth and firmness to the succulent, salty finish, which shows a waft of applewood smoke. Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Cinsault. Drink now through 2030.
