When Far Niente set out to make a wine restaurateurs could offer at a more accessible price than their much-coveted estate wines, they made sure to stay true to their signature style and their reputation for elegance, polish and panache. The result was ‘Post and Beam,’ a Cabernet and Chardonnay project that offers up all of the quality of Far Niente at a far more reasonable price. Last year the Napa Valley Cabernet barely made it to our shelf before it was gone, but we’ve been able to secure enough of both that and the extraordinary-value Chardonnay this time around to let you, our loyal Far Niente-lovin’ customers in on the deal. The Chardonnay is now completely sourced from Carneros. The Far Niente style of Chardonnay eschews malolactic fermentation in order to maintain freshness and back-palate snap, and, also, the use of new oak barrels, so as to not let that woody flavor or texture intrude on the purity of the fruit. The result is thoroughly delicious, thoroughly juicy California Chardonnay with hints of candied lemon peel, crème brulee and something a little tropical, perhaps, in there as well. Broad, but also zingy on the palate, it’s a damned nice glass of Chard for those looking to up their game without spending a bundle doing it. Those who swear by Chablis with their oysters, may want to try a glass of Post & Beam with their next dozen, but you know it’s going to be excellent with richer fare like Coquilles St. Jacques and the like. Limited availability at this price so please stock up soon! The Cabernet Sauvignon (91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot, 1% Cabernet Franc) on the other hand, is pretty rich and quite lavish. Its aromatic with dark, cooler fruit notes, broad hints of graphite, loamy earth, hoisin and blackberry bramble on a plush, mouthfilling frame and a finish that goes on and on. There is no mistaking this for something other than a savory and delicious Napa Valley Cabernet and, for the money, we’ve not tasted better from the Valley in a long time.
Tasting Panel on the Chardonnay: Aromas of rich Golden apple and vanilla bean lead to toasty oak, lemon zest, and salty minerality. Vibrant acidity is a focal point, along with a refreshingly bright and clean finish. 94 points
Tasting Panel on the Cabernet: Richly appointed, with dark blue and purple fruit and a plush mouthfeel. Notes of plum liqueur and fresh roasted coffee grace the palate. Dark chocolate and anise entwine in the wine’s well-defined structure and satinlined tannins. Spiced red tea and sandalwood engage with chocolate notes on the finish. 95 points
