Wine Subregion: Rhone Valley

While one ordinarily thinks of the Cotes du Rhone, one thinks of the Grenache-based wines of the southern Rhone Valley.  This is not one of those.  Iconic winemaker Jean-Louis Chave, instead, uses the appellation as a catchment for the wine he creates from his younger Syrah vines in the Saint Joseph appellation in the north.  Or, put another way, here’s a Northern Rhone Syrah that punches wa-ay over its weight, delivering dark, unctuous, mineral, pepper and ferrous-tinged fruit and a fabulous life-affirming finish for a price that’s really half what his, or any other, Saint Joseph Rouge costs.  This wine is a longtime PRIMA favorite you won’t want to miss!  Great value here.
