While there are still a few down and dirty old school Zin producers still laboring on the West Side of Paso Robles who have been kicking around longer, we don’t think anyone has been making wine in this up and coming growing region or knows it any better than Justin Vineyards. Producing their first wines way back in 1981, the ground-breaking Justin ISOSCELES was based, not on Zin, but on the grapes of Bordeaux, then a rarity in these arid hills. ISOSCELES’ subsequent eye-popping scores in the press and great success in the marketplace proved to many that Cab could do as well in the warmer Central Coast as in either the Napa or Sonoma valleys. And Justin’s success paved the way for newcomers like DAOU and Austin Hope, wineries whose successes have made Paso one of the hottest regions for Cabernet-based wines in the United States. And Justin just keeps on keeping on. While they’ve expanded into the mass market with several larger production wines, Justin’s Reserve level wines continue to set the pace for Cab in Paso. We’ve just tasted the 2022 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and have to say that it’s one of the most compelling ‘big reds’ we’ve tasted in quite a while, and we know that you lovers of wines like Daou’s Reserve and Austin Hope will find a lot to love here at a great price. Made from 100% Cab and sourced from the same vineyards that produce the blended ISOSCELES, it’s a wine that lacks nothing for personality, verve or drama! Jam packed with unctuous black and red fruits, it’s dark, lavishly textured and gorgeously aromatic of sweet and savory spices, minty chocolate and chopped fresh herbs. A nice dash of vanilla speaks to the new barrels in which it was aged and its finish is layered in chocolate, dried blueberry, plum and roasted tea. Bold, brash and ready and waiting for you to start grilling those steaks in the backyard, this very impressive Paso Cab will only improve in the cellar if you can but keep your hands off it!

We’ve not seen any reviews on this but if they are anything like the scores earned by the 2021, better to jump in now before the hype starts!
