The grapes for the Pinot Noir come from the winery’s favorite vineyard sites on the much cooler reaches of the county, closer to the ocean than the vineyards for the Russian River Valley Pinot, making for a bit more brightness and freshness. As always, though, the style is dark and rich with high-toned Pinot Noir aromatics, a plush texture and the kind of complexity only a combination of top terroirs can provide. This Pinot’s cooler roots show in its fresher, crunchier fruit flavors that lean more towards the wild blackberry and mulberry than the richer, more chocolate-infused cherries and cinnamon that usually define the Russian River and single-site bottlings. There is a soaring sort of elegance to its joyful, exuberant, ebullient fruit.

It’s so much a Merry Edwards Pinot Noir, yet it strikes just that hint of a different, welcome note.

James Suckling, 94 points: A wonderful interplay of brightness and savoriness captures the elegance of wines from the Sonoma Coast. Aromas of crushed red raspberries, sauteed mushrooms and wild blackberries. On the palate there’s red fruit and black pepper, with bright, crunchy acidity and taut tannins. The finish is long, with umami flavors.

Jeb Dunnuck, 93 points: The 2022 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast has a deep red hue and reveals notes of dark stones, black raspberries, pie spice, and pine spice. A decadent red with notes of raspberry preserve and ripe tannins, it has full-bodied richness that toes that line of ripeness but stays fresh. Ripe and opulent all around.
