Let’s face it. Rocca di Montegrossi is a Chianti property above all else! All located within a few kilometers of each other in A Monti in Gaiole-in-Chianti, San Giusto a Rentennano, Il Palazzino, Badia a Coltibuono and Rocca di Montegrossi form a quartet of elite Chianti producers, each making distinctive, top-quality wines we love to have in our store. Rocca di Montegrossi’s Chianti is a sensational example of the style of the region, a classic that will grace your table for many years to come.  One of our all-time favorite Chianti Classicos, it’s blended with 5% Canaiolo and 5% Colorino (no messing with Cabernet or Syrah in their Chianti at this address), owner/winemaker Marco Ricasoli Firidolfi ages the wine in small Allier forest French oak barriques for a year before bottling…not your typical handling for a simple Chianti Classico. The attention to detail shows. Great color (the sun-splashed ‘22s are all quite dark and fragrant), classically complex Sangiovese aromatics, and a wonderful mouthful of dusky mint-chocolate, dark plum and cherry-infused fruit make this a delicious drink. Plush but firm, it’s nicely balanced for such a young wine, making it a wonderful partner right now for sage butter ravioli, smoked meat platters, red-sauced pastas and (why not?) grilled burgers piled high with good stuff! Drink it now because it’s delicious, or drink it in five to seven years because you like what Sangiovese becomes with some time- it’s up to you. At under $30 a bottle, you can afford to do both.

James Suckling: This juicy, well-balanced Chianti Classico delivers fresh, vibrant red berry and cherry fruit with touches of white pepper and hibiscus. Quite firm and juicy, with nicely chewy tannins and a dainty, succulent finish. Effortlessly drinkable, but will also hold well for the next few years. 92 points

Vinous: The 2022 Chianti Classico is fabulous—one of the best of the year. A burst of dark red/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, rose petal and mint all race across the palate. Deep, layered and wonderfully sexy, the 2022 is utterly irresistible. It’s a superb effort from proprietor Marco Ricasoli Firidolfi. 92 points

Wine Spectator: A rich, dense style, displaying cherry, raspberry and blackberry flavors, with a hint of black pepper, while assertive tannins and lively acidity lend support. This is balanced, if a tad extracted, with fine length. Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Colorino. Drink now through 2032. 5,500 cases made, 2,200 cases imported. 92 points
