Speaking of Willamette Valley whites, how about this thoroughly delightful, crisp, unoaked lemon-infused Chardonnay from Stoller Family Vineyard? If Pinot Gris has become a ‘thing’ in Oregon, Chardonnay is now neck and neck, if not in terms of quantity, then at least in quality. And getting better fast! Reminiscent of, say, a Petite Chablis of the old school, I say ‘unoaked incorrectly- as a very small percentage of the juice was, indeed, fermented in older wood. That bit adds a very nice roundness and texture to a palate that’s really all about ‘bright and refreshing,’ remaining true to its cool climate mission of providing purely expressed flavors, great aromatics and lots of zing without a trace of heaviness or clumsiness. Like the Ponzi PG above, you’ll never feel sorry about finding a bottle of this ready to be unscrewed in the fridge as it is guaranteed top quality refreshment that will please the pickiest Chardonnay lover in the house while making everything you eat with it taste better. The smart Friday Follies shopper should get at least a six of each of these two Oregon gems but a case of each wouldn’t be too much.
