So you want Chardonnay with a bit more oomph to it?  How about rediscovering this old friend- a benchmark California Chardonnay we’ve been selling here at PRIMA since way before I started here in 1994.  We had one customer, I remember, that would purchase it five cases at a time!  I am not sure how or why we got off the Talbott bandwagon but we did, and it’s been quite a few years since I’ve even tried the wine.  But here’s the thing.  While a million different trendier Chardonnays have come out in the past few decades, Talbott has been simply keeping on keeping on, producing their limited estate wines from the Santa Lucia Highlands in much the same way as always.  Even with all the johnny-come-latelys out there, the Talbott Sleepy Hollow Chardonnay remains a quality and style benchmark for the Central Coast.  It’s full-bodied, for sure, and rich with toasty lees, lovely, mouth-filling pineapple and white peach flavors and plenty of spice, all enlivened by an overlay of life-giving of lemon-y, almost salty acidity that brings the whole wine together into a seamless, impeccably-balanced whole.  Its timeless appeal rests on the fact that everyone, from the white Burgundy snob in your household to those who prefer their Chardonnays big and rich, loves it!  It really is a strong candidate for ‘house Chard,’ and even though it has been quite a few years since I rolled a hand truck full of Talbott out to anyone’s car, those days may be returning!
