Textbook is a well-loved label around here.  Six or seven years ago, this Napa Valley negotiant with some amazing connections was created with a mission to produce wines with a bit of European flair. It proved to be the Holy Grail for us, ending our very long search for an affordable, top quality Napa Valley Cab we could recommend with confidence.  And you responded, big time, by buying cases and cases of Textbook Napa Valley Cab for at least five vintages. Well, the Braintrust at Textbook saw that, with prices screaming in the Valley, their ability to put a $25 price tag on a Napa Valley appelled wine was fast disappearing.  Instead they turned their attention to Paso Robles, the new frontier for fine quality Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines.  And, once again, they scored!  As usual, they can’t tell us the growers from which they obtained the fruit for this vastly overachieving red, but we know, anecdotally, they include a who’s-who of top Paso names from four separate and distinct growing regions in the district.  And the quality shows in this sleek, glossy, very well-made Cab that offers up plenty of rich, boysenberry, fig, plum and blackberry fruit, a soupçon of nicely articulated French wood and a seamless, quite inviting texture.  Like a lot of Paso wines these days, there’s a bit of Merlot, Syrah and Petite in the blend that adds depth and complexity to a compact, silky and aromatic wine.  Made with a welcome bit of understatement compared to some of Paso’s most visible new wave of wines, we found ourselves admiring this true value even more than some of Textbook’s Napa Valley offerings.  This is really one to order by the case as you’ll probably go through an awful lot of it during the holidays!  Very highly recommended.
