2023 Accadia 'Consono' Verdicchio di Castello di Jesi
$18.99, CASE PRICE $204/$17 per bottle
My trip to Le Marches on the Adriatic Coast of Italy last year proved to be very instructive. Along with a deep love for this mercifully-less-touristed area, I came away with a wonderful appreciation of the farmers who labor deep in these pre-Apennine foothills growing the prized Verdicchio white. The largest growing region for this very local grape is, of course, the Castello di Jesi appellation, a rather too-amorphous area spreading broadly between the coastal zone and the hills. Wherever they’re grown, they are bright, crisp, fun-to-drink wines with a ton of character. Those in the oldest, hilliest and most historical part of the zone, though, get to add the term Classico to their labels, and Angelo Accadia, a well-known painter and sculptor, has farmed some of the best vineyards in Jesi since 1983. Working now with his daughter Evelyn, he’s been bottling his very tasty Verdicchio since 1991. Accadia is now a two-person show with one of the best reputations for quality and personality in the area and, hence, their wines can be found on just about every good wine list in the region. And here in the Bay Area, too, where the Accadia Consono Verdicchio is a staple wherever the wines of the crisp, minerally whites of the Marches are appreciated. The 2023 Consono (the name the Accadia’s most easy-drinking cuvee) is a gorgeous taste of the region with lots of green herb, mint and fennel aromatics on a nicely articulated base of lightly spiced Bosc pear. Not at all light, it’s not at all heavy either. It’s bright, crisp, flavorful and minerally and, well, textural- the perfect antidote to a hot afternoon and perfect for that moment when the platters of fresh crudites and herby salads appear on the table. Salty cheeses are also a good call, and don’t forget a bowl of olives- maybe some stuffed Ascoli olives from Ascoli-Piceno if you can find them. A case of this in the fridge will not last long!
