2023 Anthony Thevenet Morgon
Morgon is one of the most celebrated crus in Beaujolais—and here at PRIMA—and is situated in the heart of its 10 cru communes. With a semi-continental climate of long, hot summers and cold winters, the region is perfect for Gamay, a grape with great versatility that has the potential to render wines as fine, elegant and complex as many Burgundies and, on the opposite side of the spectrum, wines of great force and structure with nuances more closely linked to their neighbors on the other side of Lyon from the Northern Rhône Valley. Of course, there are also the lip-smackingly delicious wines in the middle, and unfortunately a sea of cheap, chemically farmed (like 95% of the entire appellation) wines with barely a shade of life left in the bottle.
A robust and elegant red wine crafted from Gamay grapes sourced from three distinct plots on 8.5 hectares of sandy, rocky granite soils, Thevenet's 2023 Morgon bounces out of the glass with bright cherry and red berries, with floral, herbal and earthy undertones.
This is the kind of chillable, quaffable, lovable red that disappears soon after the cork is popped.
Vinous, 90 points: The 2023 Morgon is aged in concrete tanks for eight to nine months. It has an elegant and more understated bouquet than the previous vintage, featuring cherry and tomato vine aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, bitter cherry and orange rind tones. It's quite linear and classic in style, with fine tension. This is a delicious yet intellectual Morgon. Drinking window: 2026 - 2036.
