Because it is often the first major Cabernet Sauvignon to be released in a given vintage, Caymus Vineyards is viewed as a bellwether for the quality of the year's harvest. So what about 2023? Well, if the Caymus we recently tried is any indication, it looks to be another stellar year indeed for Napa Valley Cabernet. And how is the Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet itself? 

As big, flashy and fun as ever. 

Caymus traditionally harvests its grapes on the (very) late side and prides itself on refined, velvety mature tannins that frame a decadent core of rich cocoa powder and vanilla-infused plum-berry fruit. And our evaluation of the 2023 revealed just that: a classic Caymus Cab with a round, plush texture and tons and tons of flavor. The bouquet is a lively mélange of plum compote, chocolate, Kirsch and vanilla bean, and the palate has an easy-to-love softness that neatly hides some real tannins and good acidity. How do they do this every year?

True to form, the Caymus 2023 Cabernet was released from the winery in the summer, months ahead of most of its competition, and will set a very high bar indeed!
